Welcome back! Just last week I was sharing about the snow day in St. Pete 49 years ago, and now it looks like thereโs a (fairly unlikely) chance we get some snow this weekend! Still, seeing what itโs like in so much of the rest of the country, Iโll take it. Hopefully, itโs not too cold for the pirate festivities this weekendโgood luck to you if youโre braving the elements! Letโs dive in.

TBT: GASPARILLA 50 YEARS AGO

Todayโs Throwback Thursday looks back 50 years at Gasparilla in 1976. If you didnโt know, Ye Mystic Crewe has been invading Tampa since 1904 based on the theme of the famous (and dubious) legend of the pirate Jose Gaspar.
The parade weekend has become one of Tampaโs signature events, so be ready to see pirates roaming the streets regardless of which side of the bay youโre on. If you think you want to head over to attend, you can see the schedule here.

WADURDAY SATURDAY
You might want to wait until it warms up a bit, but if youโre looking for a fun (and walkable) way to explore some of the best of the Warehouse Arts District, hereโs a great way to do it.
โ๏ธ Start at Concrete Coffee for breakfast.
๐ Head to FloridaRAMA right across the street for a scavenger hunt.
๐จ Stroll down the road to the Duncan McClellan Gallery to see amazing glass sculptures.
๐ช Walk over to Expectations Gallery/Retrospect Furniture to shop a huge collection of vintage goodies.
(If you get hungry between, you can also check out St. Pete Athletic for lunch).

SKYWAY CRUISE PORT

A proposal for a multi-berth cruise terminal on the seaward side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is currently sparking discussion across the Bay. The project, tentatively called the Knott-Cowen Cruise Port, aims to accommodate larger vessels restricted by the bridge's height, with developers claiming significant job growth for the region. Meanwhile, groups like Suncoast Waterkeeper have raised questions regarding the potential impact on the nearby Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve, vitally important seagrass beds/mangroves, and the local economy the depends on these waters.

WILLIAMS PARK REFRESH

Williams Park has a long and storied history, but itโs definitely time for a little TLC. New improvements are officially in the works with a double focus on safety and community engagement. Plans include improving entrances, electrical infrastructure, sightlines, and targeted landscape/hardscape upgrades with a goal of enabling consistent day-to-day programming and amenities. Combined with plans to upgrade the bandshell, the city aims to turn the park back into the vibrant community anchor itโs meant to be.
Some residents have voiced concern about the issue of homelessness (and lack of discussion about it in these plans), as the park frequently serves as a congregation place for homeless individuals who may be pushed out. While homelessness is outside the scope of this specific project, hopefully the city will be taking those concerns into account as well.

CIVIC SURF
Shoreline Protection: St. Pete has launched a comprehensive Seawall Master Plan to address coastal flooding and sea-level rise, and the City is seeking resident input via a virtual meeting and online survey. Share your feedback.
Individual Artist Grants: To support the local creative economy, the City is offering $5,000 grants to up to 15 professional artists to help advance their creative practice. Applications are being accepted through February 27, and you can find full eligibility details here.
